A jacketed reactor is a vessel with an outer jacket or surrounding layer through which a thermal medium flows, enabling indirect heating or cooling of the reaction contents.
Jacketed reactors may be constructed from materials such as borosilicate glass (for visibility and corrosion resistance), stainless steel alloys (for strength and pressure capability), as well as carbon steel or mild steel (MS) for cost-effective applications.
Capacities range from small laboratory-scale volumes (e.g., a few litres) to large industrial reactors of several thousand litres, depending on the type and process requirements.
A jacketed reactor works by circulating a heating or cooling fluid through the jacket surrounding the vessel, which transfers heat through the vessel wall to or from the reaction mixture inside, thereby controlling its temperature.
